“They say there is a country that has been occupied for decades, and its people are striving to obtain their independence, to be liberated, and to live in sovereignty and dignity in their birthplace, the land of their forefathers, and the history of their heritage. However, they have not been able to do this. Their only weapon is rocks. They have experienced all types of injustices from the Israeli occupation, in all its forms and colors, and have not been victorious. Now I will tell you the story of one of the girls of the Palestinian people:
There was a young woman whose name was Bayan Ayman Al-Esseili (i.e., terrorist who stabbed a soldier), a young woman like all other young women. She studied in order to succeed, dreamed of becoming a journalist, and her family was proud of her and of her knowledge. She had a test in English, and she wanted to go to one of the learning and training centers in the evening in order to get a good grade. Bayan lived in the Wadi Al-Ghurus area where there is a vast number of Israeli occupation soldiers. Bayan was an educated young woman and most devoted to the religion of Allah and his laws (Shari’ah) in all her Shari’ah ways and in her way of dressing, which included a head covering (Hijab) and body covering (Jilbab) which hid her whole body, may Allah guard and protect her. Bayan wanted to pass through a military checkpoint to get to the center. However, a female [Israeli] soldier who saw her thought that she intended to kill or stab and shot at her pure body. Her blood flowed on to the dignified ground of Palestine, and she fell to the ground on her back, in a pool of her own blood. Thus died all the dreams of Martyr (Shahida) Bayan Esseili. Everything she had hoped for and dreamed of ended with the bullet of a soldier who stole our land. They killed her while she was still a 15-year-old girl…
We will continue to stand firm on this holy land until we obtain our independence; we will adhere to it all our lives and will not succumb to humiliation. May my homeland be free, and the occupiers go away.”

Zayzafuna is a PLO magazine for children partially funded by the PA. The magazine, which includes material written by both the magazine’s staff and child readers, represents the values of the educators and serves as a window into the minds of the Palestinian children submitting material to the magazine. Zayzafuna's website states that the magazine's advisory board is comprised of PA officials and educators, including Jihad Zakarneh, PA Deputy Minister of Education, and Abd Al-Hakim Abu Jamous, Head of the Media Department at the PA Ministry of Education. In May 2011, the Deputy Chairman of the Zayzafuna organization Abd Al-Karim Ziyada explained on PA TV that the PA gives "a monthly payment of 10,000 shekels ($2,700) to cover the magazine's [costs]."
