“Data and official numbers published by the Palestinian government’s Ministry of Finance showed that the total of all the public employees’ salaries during the first 11 months of 2015 reached 6.814 billion shekels. According to the figures, the average for salaries of public employees registered in the books of the bureau of public employees has reached about 620 million shekels a month. The number of civil and military employees in the Palestinian areas is close to 156,000 employees, whose salaries take up 51% of the Palestinian annual budget...The International Monetary Fund (IMF) demanded last October of the Palestinian government that it stop the swelling cost of salaries, which are consuming the Palestinian annual budget...If [PA Prime Minister Rami] Hamdallah’s government agrees to absorb the public employees in Gaza who were appointed after 2007, after Hamas took over the Gaza Strip, the number of public employees will rise by about 23,000 new employees, the cost of whose salaries will be about 40 million shekels a month in addition to the current 620 million shekels.”
