PA Mufti Muhammad Hussein
Sheikh Muhammad Hussein is PA Mufti and speaker at the Al-Aqsa Mosque, the highest religious official in the Palestinian Authority. He was appointed by Chairman Mahmoud Abbas.

At an event celebrating the anniversary of the founding of Fatah, Hussein presented the killing of Jews by Muslims as a religious Islamic goal. He cited the Hadith (Islamic tradition attributed to Muhammad) which states that the Hour of Resurrection will not come until Muslims fight the Jews and kill them:

Moderator at Fatah ceremony: "Our war with the descendants of the apes and pigs (i.e., Jews) is a war of religion and faith. Long Live Fatah!
[I invite you,] our honorable Sheikh."
PA Mufti, Muhammad Hussein: "47 years ago the [Fatah] revolution started. Which revolution? The modern revolution
of the Palestinian people’s history.
In fact, Palestine in its entirety is a revolution,
since [Caliph] Umar came [to conquer Jerusalem, 637 CE],
and continuing today, and until the End of Days.
The reliable Hadith (tradition attributed to Muhammad),
in the two reliable collections, Bukhari and Muslim, says:
'The Hour [of Resurrection] will not come until you fight the Jews.
The Jew will hide behind stones or trees.
Then the stones or trees will call:
"Oh Muslim, servant of Allah, there is a Jew behind me, come and kill him."
Except the Gharqad tree [which will keep silent].'
Therefore it is no wonder that you see Gharqad [trees]
surrounding the [Israeli] settlements and colonies.
[Gharqad trees] surrounding, surrounding and surrounding.
That’s the Palestine we are talking about,
with the beginning of the Jihad and the continuation of the Jihad
with the struggle and the procession of the Martyrs."
[PA TV (Fatah), Jan. 9, 2012]

This is not the only time that the Mufti has incited to murder and hatred against Jews in the name of Islam. At a funeral ceremony for terrorists, the Mufti promoted terror against Israel, saying that the terrorists’ souls “tell us to follow in their path.” [PA TV (Fatah), May 31, 2012]

He has preached on numerous occasions that Islam is at war with Jews and Israel. In a sermon at the Al-Aqsa Mosque in 2010, he preached that the Jews are the "enemies of Allah." [Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, June 26, 2010] He has also repeatedly called on Palestinians to carry out Ribat (religious conflict/war) for Jerusalem and the Al-Aqsa Mosque, as in the following example:

"The Mufti of Jerusalem and speaker at the Al-Aqsa Mosque, Sheikh Muhammad Hussein, praised the residents' response to calls to come to the Al-Aqsa Mosque and to maintain Ribat (religious conflict/war)... His honor [Hussein] appealed yesterday to the Ribat fighters in the Al-Aqsa plazas and emphasized that the practical response to the threats of the occupation… against the Al-Aqsa Mosque is to remain there, in large numbers…”

PA Shari'ah Judge calls on the world to “halt the occupation’s plots” against Al-Aqsa Mosque
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Aug. 6, 2014
“The [PA’s] Supreme Shari’ah Judge Mahmoud Al-Habbash said that if Israel will realize its threats and plans of dividing the Al-Aqsa Mosque physically and according to time, the PLO will be exempted from all commitments with the occupation, and will turn to the International Criminal Court and the Security Council to remove the occupier’s hands from Jerusalem. During a conference in Ramallah, Al-Habbash called for the Arab and Islamic nation and the world to act immediately to save Al-Aqsa and halt the occupation’s plots… [PA Mufti of Jerusalem and the Palestinian territories] Sheikh Muhammad Hussein emphasized that non-Muslims have no right to interfere in the affairs of Al-Aqsa. He explained that the time has come for Arabs and Muslims to understand the danger surrounding Jerusalem and Al-Aqsa.”

Note: The “physical division and [division] according to time” refers to a proposed law (May 2013) being reviewed in Israeli Parliament that would allow for both Jews and Muslims to pray on the Temple Mount. The law seeks to implement separate prayer times for Muslims and Jews at the site.

Seeking peace or working for peace will never contradict a person’s adherence to his right and his adherence to his cause, and we must all act accordingly, until Allah makes His ruling (i.e., until Judgment Day). We said: ‘Oh Messenger of Allah, where are they?’
He answered: ‘They are in Jerusalem and its surroundings.’”

PA Mufti: Israeli officials call to invade Al-Aqsa Mosque "to build their alleged Temple"
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, May 7, 2013
The following article was published in the context of a proposed law (May 2013) being reviewed in Israeli Parliament that would allow for both Jews and Muslims to pray on the Temple Mount. The law seeks to implement separate prayer times for Muslims and Jews at the site. The PA Mufti’s response was to call it an "invasion of the mosque... in order to build their alleged Temple":
Headline: “The [PA] Grand Mufti summons [Muslims] to Al-Aqsa and warns of [Jewish] calls to invade”
"The [PA] Grand Mufti of Jerusalem and the Palestinian territories Sheikh Muhammad Hussein summoned citizens to the Al-Aqsa Mosque in order to fill it and defend it, especially in light of recent threats from extremist settlers and senior Israeli officials who called for an invasion of the mosque and to impose Israeli sovereignty over it in order to build their alleged Temple.
In a press release, Sheikh Hussein warned that the extremists’ actions, supported by the highest political echelons and defended by the occupation authorities, have increased noticeably of late, constituting a threat to the Al-Aqsa Mosque. He added that the occupation authorities are taking advantage of the rift among Palestinians and of the Arab and Muslim engagement [elsewhere,] in order to carry out their plans. He warned that these authorities intend to grab control of the Al-Aqsa Mosque and divide it (i.e., between Jews and Muslims). Also, he called on the Arab nation and the Ummah (Islamic nation) to act effectively before it is too late, in order to save the Al-Aqsa Mosque."

PA Mufti glorifies terrorists as "noble souls"
Source: Official Palestinian Authority TV, June 6, 2012
PA TV religious program Religion and the World
Topic: The Martyrs (Shahids) who had been buried in numbered graves in Israel and whose bodies were returned to the PA.
Muhammad Hussein, Mufti of Jerusalem and the Palestinian Territories: "We ask of Allah that he let them dwell with the prophets, the speakers of truth, the Martyrs (Shahids), and the pious… Our Palestinian people received these bodies with great honor. The President's Office, and of course the President [Abbas] at its head, received these Martyrs with great honor, and likewise the entire Palestinian leadership and our people, in Ramallah and in all the regions. Every mayor came from his region, along with a group of residents of the region. They took these bodies, celebrated [their arrival] and made a large and dignified reception for them – each Martyr in his region. In truth, this is proof of our Palestinian people's interest in its Martyr sons and its prisoner sons. We say that Allah will have mercy on the Martyrs, because they died for the sake of tremendous goals. Preserving this homeland, and preserving the dignity of the Palestinian people are among the most important aims for which they died. They gave the most exalted thing that a person can give in this world – life. Giving one's life is the greatest giving. They gave up their souls. These noble souls were given for the sake of Allah, for the sake of dignity, for the sake of the homeland, for the sake of all the important values which are embodied in the struggle, the Jihad and the sacrifice of the Palestinian people."

"Today we receive this elite group of Martyrs. Our people, headed by the Palestinian leadership, welcome these Martyrs with great honor... As we accompany these Martyrs to Heaven, we should be happy: By Allah's will, we still have elite groups of Martyrs like these among us. We still have a generous leadership, and we still have a people that has never been sparing and will spare no sacrifice for this blessed land, for this homeland, for Jerusalem and the holy places, and for every inch of the pure land of beloved Palestine. Honored brothers, this is a great event: The souls of the noble Martyrs envelop us, and their souls tell us to follow in their path."

Mufti of Jerusalem praises calls “to maintain Ribat (religious conflict/war defending Islamic land)” in Jerusalem
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Feb. 13, 2012
"The Mufti of Jerusalem and speaker at the Al-Aqsa Mosque, Sheikh Muhammad Hussein, praised the residents' response to calls to come to the Al-Aqsa Mosque and to maintain Ribat (religious conflict/war) in its pure plazas in order to defend it. His honor [Hussein] appealed yesterday to the Ribat fighters in the Al-Aqsa plazas and emphasized that the practical response to the threats of the occupation and the extremist Jewish right-wing against the Al-Aqsa Mosque is to remain there, in large numbers… The Ribat fighters in the Al-Aqsa Mosque squares yesterday sounded shouts of 'Allah Akbar'… Fatah spokesman Osama Al-Qawasmi said in an announcement: 'The Netanyahu government is pushing the region towards a religious struggle whose results no one can gauge…' A press release said: 'Israel knows well that there will be no Palestinian state without Jerusalem, and that the Palestinian leadership has proved to everyone that there will be no solution or stability without the liberation of Jerusalem and the Al-Aqsa Mosque from the Israeli occupation… We have sacrificed thousands of Martyrs (Shahids), prisoners, and injured people in the Al-Aqsa Intifada (the PA terror campaign, 2000-2005), which was kindled by the will of [former Israeli Prime Minister, Ariel] Sharon to invade the Al-Aqsa Mosque. PA Mufti Hussein defends his speech citing Hadith about killing Jews, exposed by PMW
Source: Official Palestinian Authority TV, Feb. 3, 2012
On Jan. 9, 2012, PA Mufti Muhammad Hussein delivered a speech presenting the killing of Jews by as a religious Islamic goal. PMW's exposure of the Mufti's speech brought Israeli and international condemnation of the Mufti and the PA. PA TV program Good Morning Jerusalem interviews PA Mufti Muhammad Hussein concerning Netanyahu's attack on him in the wake of his statements:
PA TV host: "...Unfortunately, there are sometimes reactions to the Prophet’s hadiths (tradition attributed to Muhammad) that are perhaps not understood – specifically your own recent comments in Ramallah that were misunderstood, and that generated a great many responses... Even the Israeli Prime Minister himself intervened in this matter... Firstly, let's clarify for the viewers the nature of what was said..."
Hussein: "Unfortunately, the truth is that this is an honorable Hadith that was brought in the context of a long speech [delivered] at the 47th anniversary of the outbreak of the modern Palestinian revolution. I spoke about our people's problems; I spoke about our people's resolve; and I spoke about our people's suffering, on that occasion. The speech led me, naturally, to talk about this people remaining on this land. It came as a message that this nation will continue to pursue Ribat (religious conflict/war to defend Islamic territory) on this land, and mention was made of this Hadith that, to tell the truth, talks about things which will happen at the End of Days. However, by the nature of things, [if we take] religious texts, and separate them, take them out of context and understand them out of context, then certainly, someone who wants to malign, to create propaganda and to blow things out of proportion – will take a piece of what he wants.

Investigation of PA Mufti for hate speech, exposed by PMW, is a "despicable racist attack" and "incitement"
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Jan. 25, 2012
On Jan. 9, 2012, the principal PA religious leader, Muhammad Hussein, delivered a speech presenting the killing of Jews by as a religious Islamic goal. PMW's exposure of the Mufti's speech brought Israeli and international condemnation of the Mufti and the PA. The following is a response to the controversy by official PA daily columnist Adel Abd Al-Rahman:
"The Mufti of Jerusalem and the Palestinian territories, Sheikh Muhammad Hussein, is currently under a despicable racist attack which has targeted his person and his life…
The racist attack on Sheikh Muhammad has been joined by the president of the Israeli apartheid state, Shimon Peres; Prime Minister of the extremist Zionist right-wing, Netanyahu; and other Zionist racists, who have called upon the Minister of 'Justice', Yaakov Neeman, and the Attorney General, Yehuda Weinstein, to open a legal investigation against [the Mufti] Sheikh Hussein. They argue that he 'expressed himself' during a speech he delivered on the 47th anniversary of the [founding of the] Fatah movement 'with grave statements which could increase the tension in relations between Jews and Arabs, and even lead to loss of life', according to Peres' incitement. As for Netanyahu, he opined that the Mufti of Jerusalem had voiced 'Antisemitic' statements! ...
The Prime Minister of the most racist and aggressive government in the history of the apartheid and ethnic-cleansing state, in the history of Israel, launched an unprecedented campaign of incitement against the Mufti of Jerusalem and the Palestinian territories during the most recent meeting of the Likud faction in the Knesset..."

Speaking to Al-Quds, [the Mufti] Sheikh Hussein rejected the Israeli attack… In an exclusive statement to Al-Quds in response to the decision by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, to instruct the Attorney General to open an investigation against him [Hussein] on grounds of incitement and Antisemitism, [Hussein] said: 'There is no doubt that all of this turmoil is part of the campaign against Jerusalem, its inhabitants, and its leaders; it is aimed at diverting attention from the actions of the Israeli government and its branches in Jerusalem and in the Palestinian territories – especially the incessant excavations, [the destruction of] the Mughrabi Gate bridge, and the destruction of more Palestinian homes.' ...
He said that the inhabitants of Jerusalem are being constrained and are being prevented from entering Jerusalem and the Al-Aqsa Mosque. He emphasized resolve and maintaining Ribat (religious conflict/war) in Jerusalem and at the Al-Aqsa Mosque.

Fatah official: Israel is “in a race against time to prove and to perpetuate the Jewishness of Jerusalem”
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Nov. 22, 2011
Headline: "During press conference in the holy city – leaders in Jerusalem warn Israel against going through with the destruction of the Mughrabi Gate path leading to the Al-Aqsa [Mosque] and the building of a military bridge"
"Respected personalities and bodies warned against the Israeli occupation going through with the destruction of the Mughrabi Gate path, leading to the Al-Aqsa Mosque, and establishing a military bridge instead. They viewed the implementation of this occupation plot as an open declaration of war. This was during a press conference held yesterday by the Department of Islamic Religious Trusts in Jerusalem and the Supreme Supervisory Committee of the Arab Community in the Palestinian Interior… In his speech, Mufti Sheikh Muhammad Hussein said: 'Since their occupation of Jerusalem in 1967 and until today, the Israeli authorities have carried out dangerous – very dangerous – activities in Jerusalem in particular, and in the Palestinian territories in general… The Mughrabi neighborhood, including schools, mosques, and homes, was destroyed in the first few days of the Israeli occupation. At the time they extended what they falsely refer to as the Wailing Wall, which is actually the Al-Buraq Wall. This is a prominently Islamic wall, and it is one of the walls of the Al-Aqsa Mosque. It is an Islamic trust and an Islamic asset, and no-one but the Muslims has any right to it.' […]
Hatem Abd Al-Qader [Fatah official who holds the Jerusalem portfolio] said: 'Israel is currently in a race against time to prove and to perpetuate the Jewishness of Jerusalem and to turn it not only into the political capital of the Zionist entity, but also into the religious capital of Jews around the world.'"
