Kill an Israeli, become a Fatah leader – Fatah's new terror policy

Itamar Marcus|
  • Abbas' Fatah grants terrorist murderers imprisoned more than 20 years membership in Fatah's Conference

A recent interview with a Fatah official shows just how much PA Chairman Abbas and his party Fatah value terrorist murderers and see them as instant leaders of the movement.

Fatah Revolutionary Council member Tayseer Nasrallah announced that terrorists who have been imprisoned for more than 20 years will be granted leadership positions, as members in the coming Eighth Fatah Conference. The Fatah Conference is Fatah's fundamental policy-setting event held once every few years, at which time Fatah leaders are elected for its Central Committee and its Revolutionary Council. It is also where Fatah establishes policies, confirms ideologies, and, for example, legitimizes the use of terror against Israel. The Seventh Fatah Conference was in 2017.

In his statement, Nasrallah cited as an example, the membership in the Conference of imprisoned terrorist Marwan Barghouti who was responsible for the murder of 5 Israelis. Membership of prisoners serving more than 20 years, he added, meaning murderers or those who attempted to murder, is "true and serious representation":

The Voice of Palestine host: "There is a determined intention to include the voices of the released and exiled prisoners (i.e., terrorists) in the Eighth [Fatah] Conference…"

Fatah Revolutionary Council member Tayseer Nasrallah: "There have always been several members of the [Fatah] Revolutionary Council from within the prisons, and also brother leader Marwan Barghouti (i.e., responsible for murder of 5), who is a member of the [Fatah] Central Committee, was elected while in prison…Anyone who spent 20 years in the Israeli prisons will be a member of the conference. In this way, this conference will be held only with true and serious representation of the Palestinian prisoners."

Palestinian Media Watch has exposed statements from past Fatah Conferences, as well as the Conference's impact on Palestinians. For example, in 2010 a Palestinian child stated that the Fatah conference taught us to be "combatants" against Israel. In 2017, then Fatah Spokesman Osama Al-Qawasmi explained that Fatah at its Seventh Conference confirmed its ideology that terror is "legitimate":

Fatah-run Awdah TV host: "Has the Fatah Movement recognized Israel in its political platform until now?"

Fatah Spokesman Osama Al-Qawasmi: "Certainly not. This is not required, and we will not recognize Israel...  I declare this clearly and in a satellite channel broadcast: ‘My friends, Hamas, you should not recognize Israel, you are not required to. The PLO, the sole legitimate representative of the Palestinian people, sent a letter of mutual recognition of the State of Israel, on Sept. 12, 1993. You are not required to.' We in the Fatah Movement have not changed our position. At the Seventh [Fatah] Conference, under threat of the occupation's weapons, we did not change [our policy]. We said that the armed resistance, popular resistance, and everything is also legitimate, but we chose popular resistance as the means that we see as the most effective under the present circumstances."

Before Fatah's Sixth General Conference in 2009, PMW director Itamar Marcus made a presentation in the US Foreign Affairs Committee of the House of Representatives, stressing the PA's continued support of violence, terror and terror glorification. Following the presentation, lleana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), then Ranking Republican on the committee, called on the US to make demands of the Fatah Party at its General Conference to "reform their charter, renounce and combat violent extremism, stop using Israel-free maps, and recognize Israel's right to exist as a Jewish state."

Unfortunately, everything PMW warned about, and everything Rep. Ros-Lehtinen demanded, was ignored by the PA and given only lip service by the US.. The following year, top PA official Jibril Rajoub defined that particular Fatah Conference as when Fatah "reaffirmed" that terror is "part of Fatah's platform":

"At the [Sixth Fatah] Conference, we affirmed the struggle in all its forms, including resistance and the armed struggle...
We agreed on it unanimously about both the [Fatah] movement's aims and its principles, including the resistance and the armed struggle. The [armed] struggle, as we see it, is not an aim; it is not a hike or a pleasure cruise.
[Armed] resistance has circumstances, considerations, and factors – whether national, regional or international. It must cause pain to the occupation; it must be connected to a political platform."

The Conference is supposed to convene every 5 years, although that hasn't always been the case. The coming Fatah Conference is scheduled for May 2026.

Fatah has yet to reform, denounce the use of terror against Israel, and recognize its right to exist. Will it happen at the Fatah Conference in May? Not unless the Western countries that are funding the PA will demand it.
